  • Artist’s Statement

    John took up painting following retirement and his pictures are based on memories of personal experience at sea in the 1960s, that he composes to tell the story of a maritime era that is long gone.

  • Biography

    Childhood Malaya and Perth. Trained as deck officer with Blue Funnel Line in 1960s. Amongst lines/ships served on Cape Don in 1970s. Career change to town planning.

    Merchant Naval Career

    !964 -1971 – World wide travel in the employment of Ocean Fleets, Associated Steamships Pty Ltd and the Commonwealth Dept of Shipping and Transport. Qualification and promotion through ranks to Chief Officer.

    Town Planning Career

    1972–1973 – Planning Assistant, Perth City Council.

    Central city area land use survey, development control, drafting and model making.

    1973–1975 – Planning Assistant, Shire of Armadale – Kelmscott.

    Development control, statutory planning matters, subdivision, drafting.

    1975–1979 – Planning Officer, Town of Armadale.

    Managing day to day work of planning and drafting office during period of rapid urban expansion in Armadale. Strategic and statutory planning. Pioneering work in rural/residential development concepts.

    1979-1985 – Town Planner, Town of Armadale.

    Responsible for effective and efficient administration of planning and drafting office including all aspects of strategic and statutory planning. Prepared and introduced new District Town Planning Scheme. Introduced comprehensive, accountable reporting format to assist Council decision making.

    1985-1992 – Planning Services Manager, City of Armadale.

    Responsible for planning, building, health and drafting services. Member of City’s Management Executive. Active in pursuing integration of Council policies and functions towards the City’s strategic objectives including the broadening and modernizing of the City’s skill base. Contributed substantially towards the City’s inaugural Strategic Plan. Substantial responsibility for strategic planning, statutory enablement and practical implementation of the quality Araluen Country Club estate.

    1992-2002 – Executive Director Development Services, City of Armadale.

    Responsible for planning, environment, economic, building, health and drafting services. Member of Management Executive and Project Management Group. Project director of strategic initiatives such as:

    *Champion Lakes International Rowing Course concept, feasibility and implementation studies

    *Forrestdale Business Park concept, statutory and implementation planning

    *Armadale Strategic Regional Centre revitalization (Enquiry by design, cinema complex tenders, Harvey Norman, Albany Highway gateway project etc)

    *Forrestdale and Brookdale new urban development areas.

    *Neighbourhood Improvement Project (in conjunction with Homeswest New Living Programme)

    *The City’s inaugural economic strategy.

    *The City’s inaugural environmental position statement and strategy.

    *Review and preparation of the City’s new District Planning Scheme.

    *’Armadale Alive’ development directions publication.

    2003 – Retirement to pursue personal objectives and voluntary community activities.

    Tutor engaged in ‘Read Write Now’ adult education programme.

    2003-2004 – Senior Sessional Member Town Planning Appeals Tribunal.

    2005-2017 - Senior Sessional Member State Administrative Tribunal.
