While my subjects are diverse and use of media varied, I consider draughtsmanship and creative design to be central to my work.
After architectural studies, Ian Chapman painted at the Julian Ashton Art School for three years before studying etching and drawing at the City and Guilds School, London, and Atelier 17, Paris. He has been painting professionally and exhibiting since 1975, including 18 solo exhibitions and numerous shared, group and survey shows.
Chapman has taught extensively in his own studio classes, Mitchell School of Creative Arts, as well as workshops and master classes throughout Australia. Notably, he conducted for many years classes in life drawing, life painting and portraiture, which were filled to capacity, at the Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney.
With his wife, Vicki Parish (also an AWI member), he lived and painted in the Loire region of France for three years from 2003-2006. He now returns annually to exhibit with Gallery Jensen in Tours and also at the Château de Gizeux, where he is Artist-in-Residence. In 2008, they purchased a derelict winery in the Touraine, which they have converted to a studio and residence.
Chapman is a regular finalist in the Dobell Prize for Drawing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. As a portraitist, he has earned many commissions, has been selected three times as a finalist in the Doug Moran Portrait Prize and was represented in the ‘Portraits 2001’ Federation Celebration National Touring Exhibition. In 2012 and 2013, and 2016 the Societé des Pastellistes de France invited him to exhibit in their International Salon. In 2018 he was their Invite' d' Honneur .
