Ian Chapman
Artist’s Statement
While my subjects are diverse and use of media varied, I consider draughtsmanship and creative design to be central to my work.
Biography
After architectural studies, Ian Chapman painted at the Julian Ashton Art School for three years before studying etching and drawing at the City and Guilds School, London, and Atelier 17, Paris. He has been painting professionally and exhibiting since 1975, including 18 solo exhibitions and numerous shared, group and survey shows.
Chapman has taught extensively in his own studio classes, Mitchell School of Creative Arts, as well as workshops and master classes throughout Australia. Notably, he conducted for many years classes in life drawing, life painting and portraiture, which were filled to capacity, at the Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney.
With his wife, Vicki Parish (also an AWI member), he lived and painted in the Loire region of France for three years from 2003-2006.
